Any parent of a child with food allergies, knows how it feels to find yet another thing your child can't eat. They also know how it feels to find something their child CAN eat! For my dairy, egg, tree nut, peanut, shellfish allergic child (who recently reacted to beef) the list of things he can't eat is long. Going out for the day, involved a ton of planning and prep. God forbid, he decides he's starving and I don't have any safe snacks!
So imagine my surprise to learn that there is a allergy free/vegan bakery in our city. I scoured the website, called the double check ingredients and then had hubby approve. We planned a weekend trip to bakery. For the first time ever, my son would be able to walk into a bakery, choose ANYTHING on the menu and eat it safely!
He was excited! Hell, I was excited! He talked about eating his first doughnut ALL WEEK. He counted down the days. Finally, it came. We walked in and it smelled heavenly! Both boys perused the shelves and made their choices. Liam chose a blue iced vanilla doughnut and a lemon cupcake. Ewan, my allergic child, chose a triple chocolate cupcake and a chocolate dipped doughnut. We sat down, they jumped right in and...ended up taking one bite of the most flavourless "treats" we have ever tasted. I'm dead serious. I think they put tasteless icing on cardboard and charged us a small fortune. Disappointment level: EPIC
Now, I'm on a mission to find and/or as many allergy friendly recipes as I can. Because being allergy-free shouldn't mean taste-free.
